The MTK MTK6516 phone might resemble some of the good stuff that HTC has come up with in recent times, but this model goes one up since it has dual core functionality, working in a Windows Mobile environment. As mentioned, the main draw would be its dual core 460MHz ARM9 main processor which will be used to handle system tasks, while a 280MHz ARM7 Modem processor will take care of the telephony module segment, featuring a 3.2″ display, Windows Mobile 6.5, 256MB RAM, 256MB ROM, a 3.2-megapixel camera and 1.3-megapixel secondary camera for video calling purposes, and Wi-Fi connectivity. No idea on about pricing, but it ought to be released soon.

I think I have finally found a quad band dual SIM phone for all of us Nintendo geeks! the LevelUP Quad band dual SIM phone.

Not only is it a solid performing phone but it brings back all my sweet childhood memories spent in front of the TV playing cool Nintendo games like:

Legend of Zelda

Super Mario Brothers 3

Final Fantasy

Contra

Megaman 2

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!

That’s because, besides being a knock-out phone it also has a D-Pad and one of the best NES emulator functions you have ever seen…. but more about this later.

Because let’s get one thing straight – aside from the awesome gameplay this is one top notch quad band dual SIM GSM phone.

It takes photos, shoots videos, and also plays music and movies! Pick it up and you’ll love how solid it feels in your hand. Its QWERTY keyboard and state of the art firmware makes this the phone of choice for people who want to be productive! Just ask Steve Anderson from MobileWhack (mobilewhack.com/levelup-quad-band-cell-phone-review-you-wont-believe-this/)

The thing I love most about this phone is that the keyboard swivels. On one side, it’s a QWERTY keyboard that’s as good as any you’ll find on a Blackberry or a Nokia E71. Twist it, and it’s a Nintendo D-Pad.

At first I was skeptical about the twist mechanism.

I remember saying to myself, “moving parts on a phone, surely it will wear out!” So I kept twisting it, over and over. I put it through over 1000 twists (2 hours of my life I’ll never get back) and to my surprise the mechanism stayed firm like my old Nokia 3250!

Normally it takes me 2-3 days to fully test a phone, but this time around I spent close to 2 weeks because I didn’t want to give the phone back.

But enough about the phone in general, lets get back to the important stuff. How well it handles games.

The LevelUP M94 uses the MyNES emulator firmware to run all Nintendo roms with .NES extension, that’s right MyNES, as in MyGod why did I use any other emulator? Because it’s open source it’s always being improved and it means you can get the code so you can improve it if you are so inclined.

Thankfully I have all of my favorite Nintendo games saved up already so putting them on to the phone was not a problem (remember downloading ROMS is wrong kids the RIAA says so)…. All I needed to do was to connect the LevelUP to my computer via the USB port, open up the flash drive dragged and dropped them into the main folder. Then it was game on!

For those who have read my previous blogs (How To Buy Cellphones – Part 2) , you’ll know that my heart belongs to the Odyssey WiFi phone. But after testing the LevelUP M94, how can I explain it?

It’s like when you’re married to a really good woman and then all of a sudden this really attractive girl at work starts talking to you…

So, here’s a story of how addictive the gaming functions are on the LevelUP.

That girl in the photos is Mandy, a colleague.

She didn’t grow up during the Nintendo heyday of the 80’s. She plays World of Warcraft. The other day I was testing the phone (actually playing 1942) when she stopped by my desk and asked me why I was playing a game with such bad graphics.

I introduced her to the game, let her play a few games, and then asked for the phone back.

She grabbed the phone and ran off giggling like a…um…school-girl.

Long story short – she now PWNS me at 1943 Battle of Midway and Final Fantasy and it took me 4 days before I got <del>my</del> the phone back.

The world of cellphones is rife with continuous innovation from such features as quad band and dual SIM, to touchscreen and even wireless internet.

I love where mobile phones are headed, but the LevelUP looks back at the golden age of gaming and allows you to reminisce about those yesteryears where it wasn’t just about the technology, it was about gosh awesome fun.

Specifications-wise, this is a pretty impressive handset, boasting a 3.2″ touchscreen display, Wi-Fi connectivity, dual cameras (presumably one is meant for video calls), dual SIM carriage and TV support. Needless to say, the WG3 will also double up as a portable media player as all decent smartphones should these days, but there is no mention of its operating system which is rather strange. It does not come with a QWERTY keyboard as with the G1 though, so those who love a physical keyboard when composing messages might want to give this a miss.

Dual SIM cards are the norm in prepaid phones coming out of China these days

You would have to be blind deaf and dumb not to see all of the dual SIM cell phones coming out of China these days.

After no contract and a lower price it’s the main reason for the enduring popularity of the not quite Hiphone against even the iPhone.

Even despite the not quite iPhone OS and sometimes questionable quality.

But what does does dual SIM mean, what is it capable of and how can you best use it.

When looking at a a dual SIM phone you really need to take into consideration two things:

Dual SIM

Dual Standby

What Is Dual SIM And Dual Standby?

Dual SIM

Dual SIM is simply a single cellphone with two SIM card slots. Simple!

Dual SIM essentially refers to a phone that can hold and utilize two SIM cards in the same GSM cellular phone.

It doesn’t matter if they’re dual SIM TV phones or any other dual SIM phones as long as they take two SIM cards and read them, then they are dual SIM mobile phones.

Just because a cell phone can take two SIM cards, it doesn’t mean that both SIM cards are working. You need the dual standby function for that (More about that below).

However this doesn’t mean that having two SIM cards isn’t very useful for:

Keeping all of your personal and business contacts separate while keeping them in the same place

Keeping two separate numbers so that you are always in touch

Traveling between country to country

Dual Standby

A dual stand by phone is different to a dual SIM phone in that has one CPU but, will actively monitor both networks at the same time.

While dual SIM cell phones will put two phone numbers into the same phone you need to physically switch between them by going into the settings menu and making the switch.

Some phones, like the c7000, can handle two phone networks at the same time

However, dual standby phones can actively switch between the two without any input from you.

How Does Dual SIM And Dual Standby Work?

Dual SIM

A dual SIM phone always has two SIM card slots and, occasionally, two CPUs.

Phones that have two CPUs are few and far between. In fact, even though we have sold hundreds of cell phones and looked at thousands more we have only seen one example of a dual CPU phone.

A phone that has dual SIM slots without having a dual standby function will require you to go into settings and change it from SIM 1 to SIM 2 and vice versa.

There are some older forms of dual SIM available where the second SIM card slot is just another place, besides your wallet, to keep your spare SIM card.

Dual Standby

With Dual Standby phones there is an electronic switch in the phone which will automatically switch between SIM cards depending on which one is getting a call from somewhere.

If a second call should happen to arrive when you are already talking on the phone one of two things will happen:

1) If you have call secretary software, or your carrier has an online call secretary service then if you’re on the phone and another call comes in then it’ll be shipped to voicemail.

2) If no such software or option exists on your GSM dual mobile then the other caller will just be told that your line is busy.

How Can I Use A Dual SIM/Dual Standby Phone?

Making a call

Insert the number you wish to dial, and select SIM 1 or SIM 2

Sending A Text Message

Select the options icon and select SIM 1 or SIM 2

Saving A Number To A SIM

to store a new contact, insert their number, tap the “add contact” option and select either SIM cards or the mobile phone memory itself
